Amidst the devastating floods in the Indian state of Assam, there have been concerns about the treatment of certain communities, including allegations of biased actions by the state government and authorities, as reported by Muslim Mirror.
During a confrontation between evicted residents and forest department officials on Monday, a tragic incident occurred, resulting in the loss of Rahima Khatun's life, a Muslim woman. Additionally, three more individuals were wounded in the incident, along with three forest guards who sustained injuries during the clash.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has faced accusations of allegedly divisive rhetoric, raising concerns about the welfare and security of the Muslim population in Assam.
The Assam Police has also faced scrutiny for its reported actions against Muslims, further deepening apprehensions among the minority community. These actions have added to the distress of the flood-affected population who are already grappling with the devastation caused by the natural calamity.
As the flood situation worsens, millions of people have sought refuge in makeshift shelters in protected areas. Unfortunately, these shelters lack adequate resources, with limited access to food and insufficient government aid reaching them in a timely manner.
Consequently, some displaced individuals have sought temporary shelter on land under the forest department's jurisdiction. The situation calls for urgent attention and comprehensive support to address the needs and welfare of the affected communities.
